A degree is any of a wide range of status levels conferred by institutions of higher education. Such as with other professions, teaching in universities is only carried out by people who are properly qualified. In the same way that a carpenter would pass through the grades of apprentice and journeyman to attain the status of master carpenter when fully qualified by his guild, a teacher would become a master when he had been licensed by his profession, the teaching guild. These teaching guilds in various cities took on the identity "university" when granted a charter (by the Pope or the Holy Roman Emperor in Europe's case), and students were admitted to the university and passed through its grades in ways directly analogous to those of the trade guilds.

What academic degree did Einstein have at the time he published his Special Relativity?
Q. I hear that he was not even a scientist when he published his special theory of relativity. Just a clerk working at a patent office. But how's that even possible? How did he work out all his formulas and calculations?

A. He had a doctorate degree when he was working as a clerk. After he obtained his phd, he was unable to find a job in academia. While at the patent office, he did not come up with the theories by writing equations, but he would formulate thought experiments. For example, he imagined that he was going 99.99% of the speed of light, but next to him was a light beam. He realized that he would never be able to catch up with the light beam because that is the speed limit of the universe. Therefore, the light beam would continue to get farther and farther away from him. I disagree with a lot of the previous answers. It is true that Einstein had a lot of his ideas from other people, but he was the one who put two and two together. For instance,… [cont.]

MA degree getting published in academic journal?
Q. Some my PoliSci (International Relations- Security emphisis) have been wondering if MA degrees ever get published in academic journals. For sure it's uncommon but some of us have papers that are truly excellent in new areas of study, such as in implications of the current revisitation to privatized security. I'm talking about AFTER graduation when we have more time. I suppose a professor could still sign on, but if anyone heard of MA's getting published themselves

A. any chance you could get a prof to sign on for a research paper? I know of several grad students who have gotten their name into respectable journals this way.

What are these academic degrees called in French?
Q. 1. High school diploma 2. Bachelor's degree( a regular 4-year university degree). 3. Master's degree ( 1-2 year year graduate degree after the bachelor's degree) Thanks!
Asked by Mark - Thu Sep 3 09:16:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A high school diploma is called a Baccalaureat (or Bac for short). The university degrees were changed a couple of years ago. Here is the situation as it is now: The university degree takes three years and is called a Licence. The Masters degree takes two years after the Licence and is called a Masters.
