What are the 'lingua franca's of the world? I.e., what are the best languages to know?
Q. English is obviously one. What else? Spanish (most of the Americas, Spain) Arabic (most of the middle east, parts of Africa). French (parts of Africa, France, Haiti, Lebanon) Chinese? (Mandarin v Cantonese?) Russian? (former Soviet bloc) I guess, what I'm asking, if you could study five languages (with no consideration other than practicality), what would they be? How many speakers of Hindi are there? My impression was always that India had a pretty diverse mix of languages, such that English was the preferable lingua franca. Anyway, thanks for input! I speak a little German and a little Japanese, but I'm hoping to get at least roughly conversational in a few more.

A. Don't forget Hindustani(Hindi/Urdu) and German. Five languages: 1. Spanish 2. Hindi 3. Arabic 4. Chinese 5. French In no specific order. ___ In India only 8% of the population can speak English. 40% of the population's mother tongue is Hindi and 70% of the population can speak it as a first or second language. Hindi has about 366,000,000 native speakers( The second most in the world behind Chinese) and a total of 650,000,000 (the third most in the world behind English and Chinese) . And in 2008 there has been a motion from India to make Hindi one of the official languages of the United Nations. So far there are only 6 languages of the UN, Russian, Arabic, French, Spanish, English, and Chinese. They also speak it in Pakistan, Nepal, [cont.]
