Europe (/ˈjʊərəp/ YOOR-əp or /ˈjɜrəp/ YUR-əp) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus region (Specification of borders) and the Black Sea to the southeast. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one.

Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population (although the country covers both Europe and Asia), while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. However, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% by 2050. In 1900, Europe's share of the world's population was 25%.

Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 16th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were largely focused upon Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in Western European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War, Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the west and the Warsaw Pact in the east. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Is there anywhere besides Western Europe where a state was dedicated to freedom and equality in ancient time?
Q. The modern democratic state is always attributed to Western Europe and its history by books, professors, history, government, etc...I understand that the founding fathers of America come from Western Europe, so that is why. But, was there any other state, tribe, or nation that had a democratic system (rule by the people) in any other place without Western European influence?

A. There's a lot of guff spoken about this idea of democracy. Our modern representative, inclusive democracies owe nothing to Ancient Greece but the name. After the fall of the Roman Empire, and the rise of the Feudal system, limited governments emerged and they developed by the 19th century into the modern sort of democracy. As for republics, well the Maya had a type of government in the Post-Classic period called a multepal, a sort of republic.

What country in Europe is the best to raise family?
Q. Hi, I live in US with a husband and 3 kids. I am thinking about living in Europe for a while in some quiet place, but close to the city. What is the best country to live with good schools, people, healthcare, culture, etc? May be UK or Switzerland?

A. On levels of family happiness based on Health care, Education, best income per head and so on then the Republic of Ireland is the best country not only in Europe but in the world. However if you want to be in a rich and powerful country that is also a simply nice place to live then the United Kingdom, France or Germany are definitely the best. The UK has the best trained army in the world and is the 3rd trade capital of the world, France is cultural and also rich and Germany is very technologically advanced. Overall I would say the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland are best, they are politically stable, extremely good with national defence and are simply nice countries. It may seem strange but the countries of Liechtenstein or… [cont.]

What is Europe's unification and the changes it will make on the USA?
Q. United States of Europe" book, tell me the significance of Europe's unification, and the changes it will make for the way the USA does business.

A. Hi, I read that book a few years ago, before I moved to Europe. Good book. I don't remember much, so I'll speak broadly. The EU wants to promote "work-life balance" and management by people, not profits. This is the reason I moved to Europe. They want to humanize the business, promote social responsibility, and maximize profits for all stakeholders, not just shareholders. In the US, it's hard to ask for a day off or leave early without feeling guilty. Therefore workers put in a lot of "face time" and that leads to a decrease in productivity. In Europe, if people need to go home to take care of their child, that is respected, and it's also respected that you have a healthy social life in conjunction with your work life, and that you as a… [cont.]

Divisions of Europe

  • I have ever deemed it fundamental for the United States never to take active part in the quarrels of Europe. Their political interests are entirely distinct from ours... They are nations of eternal war.
  • Whoever lights the torch of war in Europe can wish for nothing but chaos.
  • You know what the funniest thing about Europe is? It’s the little differences.
