Spanish ?
Q. I have to write a two page paper for my Spanish class. I am able to write on whatever topic I chose as long as its about either the language or culture or pertains to it somehow. Does anyone have any interesting ideas on what to write on? And by interesting I mean wont completely bore me to death. I have already written a previous paper about "The Day of the Dead," and that was about the only interesting topic I found. Any help please?

A. I'm always amazed when teachers expect students to write on topics that bore them. No writer on earth sits around writing about stuff that bores them! Why should you? So I applaud your teacher's willingness to let you write whatever you want. But... what interests you? You should start right there. Because the chances are really good that someone who speaks Spanish (like probably thousands of someones who speak Spanish) is also interested in that. And thanks to the Internet, you can research anything in just about any language. Here's an example: I'm guessing you might be considering going on to college. You may have thought about what you have to do to get into one, where you would attend, and what your life would be like while… [cont.]

How can I start a conversation in Spanish with a stranger? Is it appropriate to do so?
Q. I'd really like to practice my spoken spanish, and I know that the people that I already speak it with "dumb down" their spanish for me. Would it be considered strange or rude to speak to a stranger in Spanish (assuming I've already determined that they speak Spanish!) What if they've already addressed me in English? The only place I feel comfortable responding in spanish right now is the Mexican restaurant, and I'm starting to get sick of enchiladas! I know there's much more to the Spanish-speaking world than cheap taquerias!!! How can i be more confident to approach people in Spanish? I don't want to be viewed as rude or patronizing... Sigh...I should know by now that wanting to be fluent in a second language instantly flags me as… [cont.]

A. Yes, it is appropriate to start a conversation with a stranger in Spanish-speaking culture. In a business with Spanish-speaking workers, in order for people to address you in Spanish, you can indicate your willingness by following a simple cultural custom. It is customary in Mexico for a customer to greet the workers in a place of business as soon as he/she walks in the door. For example, if you go into a convenience store or a clothing store, you immediately greet the person behind the counter before looking around in the store. The beauty of following this custom for you is that you have the first word, so you can establish that the language of conversation will be Spanish as soon as you walk in the door. What are some spanish terms of endearment?
Q. My girlfriend of 3 weeks is Puerto Rican, and fluent in spanish and english. I however don't speak spanish at all. I would like to give her a bit of a surprise though, and be able to call her something like sweetheart or cutie, but in spanish. Does anybody know any terms of endearment in spanish? If you can, include what they mean too.
