A person's vocabulary is the set of words they are familiar with in a language. A vocabulary usually grows and evolves with age, and serves as a useful and fundamental tool for communication and acquiring knowledge.

Knowing and using a word

A vocabulary is defined as "all the words known and used by a particular person". However, the words known and used by a particular person do not constitute all the words a person is exposed to. By definition, a vocabulary includes the last two categories of this list:

  1. Never encountered the word.
  2. Heard the word, but cannot define it.
  3. Recognize the word due to context or tone of voice.
  4. Able to use the word but cannot clearly explain it.
  5. Fluent with the word – its use and definition.

Types of vocabulary

Listed in order of most ample to most limited:

Reading vocabulary

A person's reading vocabulary is all the words he or she can recognize when reading. This is the largest type of vocabulary simply because it includes the other three.

Listening vocabulary

A person's listening vocabulary is all the words he or she can recognize when listening to speech. This vocabulary is aided in size by context and tone of voice.

Writing vocabulary

A person's writing vocabulary is all the words he or she can employ in writing. Contrary to the previous two vocabulary types, the writing vocabulary is stimulated by its user.

What can I read to improve my vocabulary?
Q. I'm over 30 and have a good vocabulary. I want to improve it, but the "improve your vocabulary" books I've found teach words out of context and are used only once in an example. What authors and newspapers consistently use a larger vocabulary? I might be able to better learn from those.

A. There's no faster route to making an impressive vocabulary word unimpressive than to use it in a way that's not quite right, because you just learned it five minutes ago and are working solely off the dictionary definition. I knew someone in high school who had to write a sentence using the word 'deter,' which means, 'to prevent or block.' His sentence was: " 'Stop or I'll deter you!' the girl yelled." Which tells the teacher nothing except that he just read the definition of 'deter.' Look at it this way: a good vocabulary is like a good wardrobe: it takes time to accumulate. You can't just rush out to the store and fix a sloppy, unflattering wardrobe in one go, and likewise, it takes some thought and personal taste to improve your… [cont.]
