A written language is the representation of a language by means of a writing system. Written language is an invention in that it must be taught to children, who will instinctively learn or create spoken or gestural languages.

A written language exists only as a complement to a specific spoken or gestural language, and no natural language is purely written. However, extinct languages may be in effect purely written when only their writings survive.

A. If you are using Microsoft Word on a Mac, or if you have installed the Office 2010 beta for Windows, search help for the AutoText feature. AutoText will automatically replace what you type with whatever you've assigned (it can be characters, pictures, text, you name it) to any character sequence you specify. This amazing feature has been on the Mac for years and comes to Windows in the latest Office 2010 version.

Do you think that text messaging affects the spoken or written language of the user?
Q. How so?? As far as academically, do you have any concerns about children who use excessive texting?

A. I think it does have an affect, yes. People that aren't very good communicators just love texting. I know a lot of people who much prefer to text rather than talk in person, etc. And it isn't good because they are never going to learn when they have texting to retreat back to. Texting is an awesome tool, but it cannot take the place of other forms of communication, it just isn't good enough. I don't know how many times my words have been misconstrued by others and vice versa through texting, because you don't know the context people are putting their words in when you can't hear them say it. I don't know much about children when it comes to texting, but I can see how it would affect them if they text a lot. Unlike adults nowadays, they… [cont.]
